about

Strung Out was written after devastating bushfires impacted Australia. It was written as a way to highlight that humanity must mitigate anthropogenic climate change while realising that everyone can do better, including The Washing Line Economy's lead singer. Since 2020 has unfolded, Stung Out has taken on a second meaning relating to the struggle that humanity has faced dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

lyrics

On the stove I've got chickpea stew
I'm feeling sick, but I've got no flu
I'm all strung out
Thinking about us
I don't exercise nearly enough
My bed is comfy but I'm sleeping rough
I'm looking gaunt I'm not
Feeling strong

Could I be wrong
Could life mean something
The world's burning up
I still feel nothing
Could I be wrong
Could life mean something
The world's burning up
I still feel nothing

So profoundly
People
Confound me
There's no doubt
We're all
We're all strung out
So profoundly
People
Astound me
There's no doubt
You're all
Strung out
What are you
Thinking about

The world's in turmoil still nobody cares
We're all strung out by our bills and our fares
It's our future it's not
Truth or Lies

Don't get me wrong I'm a hypocrite
I'm too small minded to give a shit
And I'm falling down
Into a hole

My little heart's stuck in my nerdy head
When I'm not with her I feel certainly dead
It's a shame she probably doesn't
Want me in her house

Could I be wrong
Could life mean something
The world's burning up
I still feel nothing
Could I be wrong
Could life mean something
The world's burning up
I still feel nothing

So profoundly
People
Confound me
There's no doubt
We're all
We're all strung out
So profoundly
People
Astound me
There's no doubt
You're all
Strung out
What are you
Thinking about

"Soon enough this earth will return our favour
Intelligence and integrity to be our only saviour
Humanity's inhumane behaviour
The gods must be angry with all of us
The gods must be angry with the whole lot of us
Earth wind water and fire
Soon enough
Nature will return to nature"

So profoundly
People
Confound me
There's no doubt
We're all
We're all strung out
So profoundly
People
Astound me
There's no doubt
You're all
Strung out
What are you
Thinking about
